The Super bowl Media circus underway and it was weird. Not because of the players, not a whole lot of personalities on either of these teams, but because of the responses certain players have given. Specifically Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, both were far more open than usual through the first two days of Media week in Houston. Belichick answering in detail about his relationship with his father, a Navy scout, somewhat shocking considering the coach gives rather blasé answers to questioning. Brady also got emotional almost brought to tears by the question of a 7 year old boy who asked who Brady’s hero was. Brady got choked up talking about his own father as a role model (which led to the Belichick question by the way) Is players showing emotion unusual? No. Is coaches going into great detail about certain questions atypical? No. Brady and Belichick though? Two of the game’s most stoic figures getting deeply personal with the media that’s highly unusual. Which brings me to the question that has popped into my head, is this the end of the Brady of Belichick combo?
It’s not inconceivable. Brady is 39 and Belichick has coached with the Patriots for 17 years and been in the league since 1979. Maybe if they win the dynamic duo will do what no ones expecting but more should be talking about, ride off into the sunset. Both have all the titles they could ever want, well maybe not Belichick I could see him craving a few more coach of the year awards, and are pretty well set to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Brady has said in the past he wants to play into his forties but plans change. Brady’s mother, it was reported by CSN New England, has been battling a fairly serious illness. Perhaps Brady wants to spend more time with his family before his parents get to the end of their lives. Wouldn’t be surprising Brady is a noted family man. Plus at some point the human condition forces a person to say, I’ve done this for long enough reached the pinnacle maybe it’s time to kick back.
Brady isn’t human though in the way he plays the game so perhaps that doesn’t factor in and if he loses the Super bowl there is no way he retires. Which brings me to my last ditch effort to put this conspiracy theory into the world of sports media. If the two were to walk out there is a backup plan. Jimmy Garappalo and Josh Mcdaniels would pick up where they left off with a Super Bowl roster and a way for Patriot land to win 3 to 4 more titles in the next 10 years.
Sure its wishful thinking. Its not out of the realm of possibility if the patriots win the Super Bowl maybe Brady and Belichick will finally be out of our lives forever. If that’s the case I guess that might be a reason to get behind the pats to win this Super Bowl.
