“This one is unequivocally the best” A line by Patriots owner Robert Kraft that will go down in history with Pat Bowlen’s “This one’s for John”. How do you define greatness? Is it with titles? Overcoming the obstacles? Or is it just through the eye of the beholder? Tom Brady is the greatest quarterback of all time and believe me that is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to put in print.
At half time of Super Bowl 51 it looked like the game was over the Falcons up 21-3 and defensively dominating the Patriots. Sacks, Fumbles, Pick sixes you name it they put em up. The Falcons looked like the team they were all year on offense but with an even more dominant defense. The game was over, I was going to have to write a piece entitled shoot me I didn’t pick against Tom Brady. All that changed though.
The second half and the game were won by the Pats O line. Where they had been dominated in the first half they began to give Brady the protection and time he needed. With time Tom Brady did what Tom Brady does make strikes down the field to throw two Touchdowns and two point conversions to tie the game. Of course there was Super Bowl luck but this time it worked out for the Pats as Julian Edelman Made a catch on Robert Alfords leg. That was the best Super Bowl play I’ve ever seen. It tops Malcom Butler at the goal line.
Which brings me to first, thank the football gods. Who delivered in a big spot after an incredibly crappy playoffs season. The Super Bowl delivered in a big spot to do what its meant to, unite a country deeply divided and give us all one thing to root for in solidarity. Is this the greatest Super Bowl ever? Its competitors are 49 aka Malcom Butler at the goal line and Super Bowl 43 Steelers over Cardinals on Santanio Holmes toe tapping catch in the end zone. The case for this one is obvious, great defense from both teams in the first quarter, great offense for both times, Incredible catch, biggest comeback in Super Bowl history, and the first overtime in Super Bowl history. This offseason there will be plenty of time to debate that. One thing that won’t be debatable anymore though,
Tom Brady and Bill Belicheck are the best ever and the Patriots are the greatest sporting dynasty of North American Sports. There ya happy Patriots fans?
