Album Review: The Marshal Mathers LP

With the NFL season nearly at the draft I would like to introduce something different. Kind of fun, that I want to do this summer, Album reviews. Now in fairness I’m a big hip hop guy but I’m going to try to have a little bit of everything in this. I thought I would start though with one of my favorite Albums the Marshall Mathers LP. Early Eminem is the best Eminem though I love his recent stuff as well. So keep in mind I’m a Stan, oh that songs on this album. People love that song it’s a little to heavy for me though, really good but to heavy to listen to regularly. So, here’s how this works I will put out the tracks and a score of one to ten and average the score of the album. Then a short summary.

An obvious warning for Explicit language is in affect as I will be quoting song lyrics. Racial slurs will of course not be included and marked out with dashes. Or simply referred to as the N word.

The Album starts strong Kill You is a solid song even today that shows the darker side of Ems alter ego Slim Shady in a lighter fashion. Stan is a classic of course but for me it just isn’t his best song and not the best song on this album. Who Knew gets the job done and is the quintessential teen angst song. This was what I was bumping in the ninth grade and at the time it connected with me it is still a great song. Then we hit the core of the album and really its strongest part. Starting with The Real Slim Shady. Not much to debate there but Remember me is an underrated banger. With a deep throbbing beat and RBX’s rough voice plus the spray can affects at the front it’s the best “deep cut” from this album. Drug Ballad and Amityville may be more personal preference but the lyricism in Drug Ballad easily gives it a nine. Kim is my least favorite song on the album, I get the purpose but its literally just Em screaming with very little lyrical content. Criminal has one of my favorite Eminem lines “Fire at the private eye hired to pry in my business, die bitches bastards brats, pests this puppies lucky I didn’t blast his ass yet” Overall the album is by far Eminems best. Some would argue that what has held him back is that he is always trying to replicate this album. That is a debate for another day though.
