Late Night Ponderings: The State Of Soccer In America Spoiler It’s Not Good.

Today the scout that found Christian Pulisic said stay away from Major League Soccer. So with that I decided to ponder this evening the state of US soccer. My friends it is not good, in fact it may be non existent. Listen it is no secret, the United States will not play in the world cup this year and that in itself will not help soccer because 70 percent of the US watches the world cup just to see the US. Other than that unfortunately those 70 percent are woefully uninformed about what soccer is.

I hate to break it to you but the United States will never be a soccer nation and I would be shocked if we won a world cup in the next half century. Why? The question has been asked many a time. One soccer isn’t advertised here in the US MLS games are not easily available on public television. The rest of the world tunes into there local station and catches futbol easily, we do not. MLS is not broadcast heavily enough in the American market to ever draw anyone into soccer. There are also just too many other avenues for athletes in America. Football, Baseball, Basketball, Hockey, and Golf just to name a few. Soccer will never over take any of those sports. It is also an excellent example of why the women’s team excels, there is no Women’s football, Basketball, Hockey, and Golf are not nearly as accessible as soccer. So where as teenage boys disperse into other sports teenage girls stick with Soccer with the end goal of someday being on the women’s national team. I should rephrase my statement, mens soccer in the United States will never be successful.
America has to be the best in the world at everything. It is our greatest weakness. However we must accept the fact that we will never be the best in the world in Soccer. No matter what we do, no matter how hard we try the efforts will be for not. We have a reached a plateau and the only way to go now is straight forward.
