NFL Notebook Week 3: The Chargers Are Unfortunately Doomed

Each week Eric Jensen recaps his notes from the past week of games in the NFL, yes the NFL Notebook is a physical notebook, let’s dive into the NFL Notebook for week 3.

NFL Notebook Week 3

Bills Dolphins (due to some copyright stuff I can’t directly put the highlights into this piece but if you click the highlighted headings, you can go to the NFL Youtube page and watch these games for yourself)

Melvin Ingram is still such a baller. He put up two sacks in this game and felt like he was in Josh Allen’s lap for most of the day. Really the whole Dolphins defense blitzed like crazy in this one, absolutely wild, because the Bills burned them a few times on that.

Next time free agency rolls around, come on guys give Melvin a contract. Continuing, look man Jaylen Waddle, at this pace is probably going to be the all-pro at wideout. Another 100-yard day for Waddle, who has just developed into really the best receiver that Alabama produced out of that loaded group.

The fact the Bills just have no running game again outside of JA’s legs is very concerning. This offense is to Allen reliant sometimes.

This Dolphins offense didn’t get many chances, but when they did, they capitalized. This offense is just ruthlessly efficient and that goes for Tua, who was probably concussed but had another great day. Still want a little more from Tua before I lock him in as a no doubt top ten passer for the year, but later in this article for this week he clocks in at number five.

Raiders Titans

Derek Carr has yet to play a game this year that is anywhere near how good he played last year. 26/44 is just not good enough for what the Raiders are paying him. He has taken a notable step back decision-making-wise. Teams are starting to just blanket Devante Adams and the Raiders offense doesn’t really have any answers for that.

I was a Josh McDaniels defender in the off-season, mainly because I believe in people getting better and second chances. He’s been a genuinely awful play caller though over these first three games. A very public meeting with Mark Davis right before meeting with the press core probably does not help his confidence. The Raiders are a mess right now.

The Titans are going to be fine because: They got Derrick Henry involved in the passing game, they went back to the play-action passing game, and Robert Woods is finding his role in this offense.

These Titans need to work on playing and calling a full and complete game as they struggled in the second half, but I am not nearly as worried about them as I was before. In the AFC South, they have some room to figure things out.

A Brief Pause For Some PFF Insight

PFF isn’t the end all be all, you still have to watch the games, but it does give a good idea of how the league is stacking up. So according to PFF:

Do with this info what you will.

Jags Chargers

The Chargers are done. Too many injuries, and Rashawn Slater the biggest of all of them. This team isn’t going to be able to protect an already injured Justin Herbert.

Receivers arent catching passes for Justin Herbert now either, several big drops killed key Chargers drives on Sunday. Also, if Brandon Staley is such a genius whose brining this new age Fangio defense and zone blocking run scheme, why does his defense suck and why can’t the Chargers run the football?

We’ve given this man enough leeway. The Chargers need a new voice at head coach, this team isn’t making it to January. I am sad. Free Justin Herbert man.

Trevor Lawrence and the Jags on the other hand are just working on building the fundamentals. I respect that approach in September, I’m not crazy high on Lawrence but he is improving and you can sort of see why he was so highly touted as a prospect. Let’s see more.

Jags defense, big, fast, scary upfront. This looks like the team that should be the frontrunner in the AFC South.

Patriots Ravens

Without Mac Jones, and it seems as if the Pats are going to be without Mac Jones for a while, what are the Patriots? They don’t have an awe-inspiring defense, the backup is Brian Hoyer, this is currently just another meandering NFL franchise.

Jones looked good before the injury Sunday two of the three interceptions he threw weren’t really his fault. The Patriots are just a team right now, that’s a wild statement to put out there.

This Ravens defense has its issues, but you can see the bones. Kyle Hamilton has struggled a bit but you saw his playmaking ability on Sunday. This is not a group to be messed with.

Bonus, more Lamar love. Really who is playing better at QB in the league right now? Nobody, speaking of which…

Top 10 QBs of NFL Notebook Week 3

  1. Lamar Jackson
  2. Josh Allen
  3. Jalen Hurts
  4. Patrick Mahomes
  5. Tua Tagovailoa (see I do know how to spell his name, I just avoid it when I can.)
  6. Justin Herbert
  7. Aaron Rodgers
  8. Matthew Stafford
  9. Jared Goff
  10. Ryan Tannehill

Lions Vikings

I love Dan Campbell but facts are facts, his poor coaching decisions cost the Lions the game on Sunday. Now Detroit is without De’Andre Swift for several weeks and even more banged up on the front line. The Lion’s upcoming schedule looks like this: Seattle, New England, BYE, then Dallas. It would be nice if the Lions even though depleted could win very winnable matchups between the Seahawks and Patriots.

This is where we find out the toughness of this group. Jared Goff has looked very good through three weeks, we will see how he looks with limited weapons. This one really stings for the Lions because it was a very winnable game.

A PFF insight, the Lions running game grades as the seventh best in the league Jamal Williams has looked really good this year. Hopefully, that keeps this Lions team afloat.

Vikings: win a big game, 11 am starts against the Lions do not qualify.

Broncos Niners

They won I guess.

The good: Randy Gregory I owe you an apology, the dude has flat out been a beast, all over the field. This Broncos defense is once again the team’s strength, they’ve just drafted really well on that side of the ball and put together a great group. Secondary even without Simmons has looked great as well, Josey Jewell is once again balling at linebacker. Things are going really well right now.

The bad: Jerry Jeudy, I am not for you. This guy acts like a superstar but he sure doesn’t play like one. Get the drops under control, I do not care how open you get, you have to make big plays. Don’t go and trash talk Broncos legends online after the game. This dudes role model, he has admitted, is Antonio Brown. He is not half the player AB was and I don’t want the off field headache that he constantly brings if he can’t cause success on the field. I am against the Broncos paying this guy on every level, I do not want him on this team next year. The guy is a draft bust, go find someone who actually catches the ball.

The facts are the facts, this offense looks best running the ball. So lean into it. Run the football, this offense does not fit Russell Wilson’s skill set at all.

Something really sad: The Broncos have yet to score 20 points this year, pathetic.

  1. As always, a balanced perspective on week 3. But, a Josh McDaniels defender? Perhaps Mr. Davis has a right to be pissed.

Can’t wait for next week in the NFL.
