NHL Power Rankings January 27: Oilers Surge

Do I watch the most puck? No but I’ve had my eye on the league close over the past month or so, so here is an attempt at outline the top 20 clubs in hockey right now. I hope you enjoy the Power Rankings.

  1. Boston Bruins: An insane goaltending duo leads the way for the Bruins. Not to mention ageless wonder Brad Marchand who has been very solid for the Bruins this year. Playoff questions persist but this is a no doubt top five team in hockey.
  2. Edmonton Oilers: When you win 15 straight and have the best player on the planet in Connor McDavid, it’s really hard to put this team anywhere else than two. Unsung hero of this squad, Zach Hyman.
  3. Dallas Stars: This team just has dudes on dudes on dudes. With seven 30 plus point scorers and excellent goaltending it’s hard not to view the Stars as a Stanley Cup Contender.
  4. Colorado Avalanche: Alexander Georgiev’s last five games have been immaculate in terms of save percentage and GAA. On the offensive side Nathan Mackinnon is the NHL MVP, and Logan O’Connor has emerged as a true depth scoring piece. The team is not fully healthy either.
  5. Vancouver Canucks: Young, fun, and fast. That’s what you have to be in todays NHL to compete and the Vancouver Canucks are ahead of schedule, they could use some more depth and will need Thatcher Demko incredible run in net to continue but they are a very real threat in the west.
  6. Winnipeg Jets: When you have the Vezina frontrunner on your team in Connor Hellebuyck and a terrifying first line it’s hard not to put you in contender status.
  7. Vegas Golden Knights: They’ve had ups and downs recently but this would still be my favorite to come out of the west. Endless depth, a stud goaltending duo, and playoff experience with lots and lots of vets.
  8. Florida Panthers: They don’t play boring games. That simple, it is always fun to watch the Panthers. What a year Sam Reinhart is having. My team to watch in the Power Rankings.
  9. New York Rangers: Only this low because they have had an exceptionally bad month. Still a very solid power play unit, and Igor Shersterkin despite having a bit of a down year remains a guy that can carry a team in the playoffs. Lot’s of time left to move up.
  10. Carolina Hurricanes: Talk to me when they have some playoff success. Same team as it has been the past few years, very good, look dangerous but I have serious doubts whether they can play in May or not.
  11. Toronto Maple Leafs
  12. Detroit Red Wings
  13. Saint Louis Blues
  14. Tampa Bay Lightning
  15. Philadelphia Flyers
  16. Los Angeles Kings
  17. Nashville Predators
  18. New Jersey Devils
  19. Washington Capitals
  20. New York Islanders
