The Night Before: Game 2’s Underway! April 24

Game 2, in both the NBA and NHL are under way and the midweek night before means quick hits.  Game 2 The Night Before, let’s do this!

NHL

New York Rangers Washington Capitals Game 2

  • The Ranger’s power play is absolutely deadly. 2 goals on 6 power plays for the Rangers and that is just kind of the way this series has gone, the Caps have done their best to keep things even five on five but the Rangers power play has been devastating.
  • The Capitals’ Power Play worked well in game 2 as well going 2 for 5, but the Caps simply don’t have the wherewithal or the talent level to keep up with the Rangers. Anything can happen in the playoffs but I would be entirely shocked if the Capitals survive the Rangers onslaught.

Florida Panthers Tampa Bay Lightning Game 2

  • This is my favorite series of this playoffs. I love goaltenders, I love big saves and I love low scoring, tense hockey and this series has that.
  • Andrei Vasilevskiy, despite losing made 34 saves in this game and survived an offensive onslaught from the Panthers without giving up more than three goals. Despite the Lightning being down 2-0 this series has been very close and a return to the Bay for the Lightning can change the fortunes of this series. The Tampa big guns are starting to heat up as Steven Stamkos notched his second playoff goal and Brayden Point got his first. The Lightning will need more than 23 shots on net though if they hope to solve Sergei Bobrovsky.
  • Bob was incredible in Game 2, making the save of the playoffs in the second period (pictured at top of article) great goaltending is a thing of beauty. The ability to survive chaos, stay focused and use crazy athleticism are all on display in a great goaltending performance like Bobrovsky’s he’s a great goalie and playing at the top of his game, and that bodes extremely well for a deep Panthers playoff run. Winnipeg Jets Colorado Avalanche Game 2

  • Credit where credit is due, Alexander Georgiev struggled mightily down the stretch and had a horrendous game 1. In game 2 AG stopped 28 of 30 shots. The Avalanche also played a masterful defensive game, and these are the type of performances the defense and AG will have to provide if the Avalanche want a deep cup run. It’s nice to see they can do it against a quality opponent in the playoffs. The series returns to Colorado tied at one and with new life. Also shout out Casey Middlestat who has been tremendous in his first two playoff games.
  • The Jets need to figure their stuff out in goal. Conner Hellebuyck has allowed 10 goals in two games, the Av’s have figured out he’s human and did a great job getting shots on net. The Jets need to get to game five tied at two or things start looking a little dicey.

Vancouver Canucks Nashville Predators Game 2

  • Elias Petterson didn’t just look flat in game 2, he looked flat out disinterested. That’s a bad sign for the Canucks, in a series with no space and few chances you need your super stars to deliver key moments and Petterson just hasn’t.
  • Juse Saros 17 saves on 18 shots, does not get much better than that defensively and goaltending wise for the Preds. We will see if the series opens up in one of the hardest playoff atmospheres in the league, Nashville Tennessee. Smashville, break out the sledgehammers and let’s party.

NBA

  • Suns just play ISO ball, yawn, boring. Get gone, bye bye, not interested.
  • Luka Doncic needs therapy, the guy is so angry, but damn is he good at basketball and he put the team on his back in game 2.
  • Obvious statement of the year: Bucks need Giannis back.
  • Pascal Siakam is my favorite under the radar NBA star, he’s just really fun to watch. I kinda dig the whole Pacers vibe honestly.
