Why Penn State missing the playoffs may just be the best thing they have ever contributed to College Football

5 years ago the words scandal, assault, allegations, mess, all were terms synonymous with the Penn State nittany lions. On Saturday they won the big ten championship and earlier in the year stunned Ohio State. Penn state has come back from the depths to be a big ten powerhouse, on Sunday they may have done something even more valuable, they may have exposed that the college football playoffs are as much of a scam as the BCS.

The Four CFP teams this year will be, Alabama, Clemson, Ohio state and Washington. Three of the four being conference champions except Ohio State. Bringing me to the point I have. The playoffs are a sham? I don’t know about that but there needs to be a more solid system of putting teams in. Either you put in the conference champs or the 4 best records from power five conferences. If you go with the conference option Penn state may have missed the playoffs as well.

I believe Oklahoma had a good chance to get in because of a big 12 championship and a stronger strength of schedule then Penn state. However if the four best records in the country are what you want, well then the committee made the right decision.

The beef people have is not with the system but with the committee who need to have more solid guidelines for whom gets in. What if you eliminated coaching bias from it to what if the AP made up the committee instead?

The bottom line is that the system is not a bad one, but a young one, one that the Penn state Nittany lions can say they helped shape, after so many years of program turmoil.
