NHL power rankings

If you didn’t know the NHL is underway and about ten games through it’s time for my power rankings. These come out for the NBA and NHL every 10 games not the whole league just the top ten teams. So without further ado here we go.

  1. Montreal Canadians
  2. New York Rangers
  3. Edmonton Oilers
  4. Pittsburgh Penguins
  5. Washington Capitals
  6. Detroit Red Wings
  7. Chicago Blackhawks
  8. Minnesota Wild
  9. Ottawa Senators
  10. Tampa Bay Lightning

So let’s examine. 7 of the 10 teams in the first top ten are from the eastern conference. For a league dominated by the Western Conference the past few years this is big news. Some big names from the Western Conference are off this list; Los Angeles, Anaheim, Saint Louis, and San Jose.

In most Power Rankings you’ll find Edmonton in a higher position than three but they have slowed down a bit over the past 2 games. The Canadians look like the cup contender we thought they would be a year ago. I have the Rangers above the Penguins simply because there offense is so much better than last year and they have Henrik Lundqvist playing with a fantastic .917 save percentage. Meanwhile dipping is the consistent title contender Chicago Black hawks. The Hawks have had a rough start with both of their goalies giving up nearly 3 goals a game. The Red wings are also higher than I expected them to be after team but I guess they are faring just fine without Pavel Datsyuk.
